The Akha Luge (ci jawr)
A unique and wonderful toy that can be found in an Akha village, this “luge” is a three-wheeled vehicle generally made of wood (although we have seen many versions of this creation, including some made of pvc and plastic wheels).
Since the Akha traditionally live in mountain villages, children sit upon the ci jawr like a sled and ride down the mountain trails - sometimes at very alarming speeds. The vehicle is steered with the rider’s feet by manipulating the angle of the braces that join to the front (downhill) wheel. Sometimes the single wheel is designed with a steering mechanism.
This toy is generally made by men, either the father or grandfather of the child.
In this image, one of the vehicles seems to have been modified to a tricycle-like design, which is appropriate for the age of the child in the image. We have some video footage of older children riding the ci jawr somewhere and will post that as well when possible.
